In Side – stereoscopic 3D puppet animation

In Side is a short puppet film made using stereoscopic technology. It tells the story of Jan, trapped in a world of his own limitations. Only the abstract world of the labyrinth, which he enters as a result of enigmatic events, forces him to truly confront himself, which becomes the seed of a new, real life.

The S3D Studio explores S3D technology and the incredible potential of stereoscopy, finding new artistic standards in the medium. In addition to its unique precision in recording 3D shots, the film also explores issues not previously addressed in 3D films, including the use of shift-tilt lenses, shooting through distorting objects, the possibilities of maximizing editing speed while maintaining viewer perception, and many others.

BEHIND THE SCENES: 2021 in the S3D Lab

In the past year, the S3D Studio team had the pleasure to work on new stereoscopic issues. This time was full of new challenges for members of the team. Another year of work on the “In Side” project has shown that the system of cyclic laboratories is beneficial for the realized project because it allows for careful pre-production of particular stages and precise preparation of assumptions. Our work was in a two-session system and we realized two research sessions (12 shooting days) directly after each other. The first shooting period took place in July, the second in September and the last in November. An important element of our work was to produce a trailer for the film “In Side”, which had its premiere during a visual seminar at the Film School in ?ód?. From the point of view of stereoscopy, the biggest novelty this year was the start of work on the creation of virtual scenery.
In 2021, we shot over four and a half minutes of material consisting of about seventy shots. The result of the workshop is over nine minutes of research material. The footage was shot in stop-motion puppet animation technique using a motion control robot (Animoco). The research team of S3D Studio focused their work on the following stereoscopic issues: convergent vs. parallel convergence, use of non-standard lenses (shift- tilt, baby lens, fisheye, macro lenses, etc.), the issue of fast editing, changing the camera’s positioning, the use of the camera’s lenses, the use of the camera’s lenses, the use of the camera’s lenses, the use of the camera’s lenses, the use of the camera’s lenses, etc. ), quick editing, changing the base, convergence during the shot, spatial effects interpretations, sense of depth vs. foreground, vertigo effect, use of macro imaging, CGI and transparency, selected editing issues (interstices and wide planes), floating window, multiring, shooting through distorting media, and out of focus vs. sense of depth. In the middle of the year 2021, the team of the S3D Studio has expanded with the postproduction department, which is supervised by dr. Piotr Napieralski, lecturer at the Technical University of ?ód?. Together, we worked on modeling and texturing the virtual decoration extension and cleaning the footage.
The year 2021 is the third year of the S3D Studio. The gradual discovery of successive stereoscopic creations before our eyes arouses our constant curiosity and delight. The year 2022, apart from the planned six shooting sessions, will focus on the issues related to the postproduction of the image and the work summarizing the entire research project.

The film shoot for In Side is underway

We are beginning another research session of the S3D Studio. Apart from the regular post-production work with the team from the Technical University of Lodz, we are starting shooting the next scenes of the IN SIDE movie.

In the coming weeks, we will try to register, among others, stereoscopic representations in the so-called vertigo effect or optical deformations (created in irregular refractive media) different for the right and left eye.

This film shoot session will last until November 25th.

S3D Studio at StopTrik IFF

This Sunday you will have an opportunity to listen to Piotr Matysiak, the head of S3D Studio, who will talk about the secrets of making IN SIDE film and about the difficulties and challenges in creating using the S3D technique during StopTrik IFF.

The presentation of the project will take place during the “Trik Show” discussion on November 7th at 12:00 p.m. in Pop’n’Art. You are welcome!

S3D studio halfway through the project

Another “lab” (September 6-21) of the research programme of S3D vnLAB Lab has ended. The team has already completed half of the planned shoot under this project.

During the latest research session (September 17), an open visual seminar of the S3D vnLAB studio was also held, which attracted great interest. The seminar was available “live”, and thanks to the cooperation with the Multimedia Service Department of the ?ód? Film School, the production and transmission took place also on Zoom and Vimeo platforms.

WATCH THE SEMINAR

Among the guests (“live” and online), in addition to the lecturers and employees of the School, there were also representatives of, among others: PISF, SFP, SPPA, ?FC, ?ód? Polytechnic, ASP ?ód?, ASP Kraków. As part of the meeting, in addition to the presentations of studio members and its activities, footage filmed as part of the research from the beginning of the project was presented.

There was also a screening of the trailer for the IN SIDE film (in 3D version) which is being produced as part of the project, the 2D version of which already has had nearly a thousand views on the school VIMEO profile.

There will be more footage of the S3D Studio and the opportunity for another meeting in November in the building of the New Media Centre.

New scenography, new world

The next research session of the S3D vnLab Visual Narrative Laboratory team is underway. The team is shooting in a new scenography – the protagonist will face the search for a solution in completely surprising circumstances.

During the two-week set, the team will work on a scene about fighting against time. The team will focus on the main cinematographer-stereographic assumption, which is operating on the limits of stereoscopic parameters and strong introduction of so called foreground.

This is the fifth meeting of the project and the first in 2021. The work will also be accompanied by extensive documentation of the laboratory task on spatial dependencies and relations of objects to each other in the stereoscopic image. This experience the team of the laboratory will share soon.

The activities undertaken in the S3D vnLab are aimed at developing standards for working with stereoscopic images in stop motion productions and adapting them to the needs of dramatic narration in film works, as well as expanding the possibilities of visual expression in S3D works. The result of the 4-year project will be a stereoscopic animated film in stop motion with the working title “In Side”. There are also plans to create a textbook on stereoscopy in animated film.

The S3D vnLab design team includes: Piotr Matysiak – studio manager and cinematographer, Anita Kwiatkowska-Naqvi – director, Mi?osz Hermanowicz – stereographer, Bartosz Kotarski – animator, Agnieszka Miko?ajczyk – puppeteer, Marcin Jasi?ski – set designer, Marta Chy?a-Janicka – scriptdoctor, Justyna Ruci?ska – deputy studio manager and production manager, J?drzej Hejduk – production assistant, Tomasz ?aptaszy?ski – still photographer, as well as Ma?gorzata Gontarska – communications specialist and Miko?aj Zacharow responsible for the production. Miko?aj Zacharow responsible for technical support and motion control.

The next session will take place at the turn of June and July.

Script Meeting

There is no denying that the S3D studio is primarily a research project. Our goal is to explore the sensations associated with binocular vision and the associated sense of space.

Although interest in stereoscopy dates back to the 16th century, there is still much to be discovered in this field. Our work aims at conducting experiments and investigating the possibility of introducing completely new 3D sensations into modern cinematography.

We think the most interesting thing about this project is that the result is not just a series of tests, but a short animated film. The focus of our work remains the investigation of the influence of stereoscopy on the dramatic value of a film work. In order to do this, we create an appropriate script, whose authors include, in addition to the screenwriter, the director and cinematographer, as well as the stereographer. This combination is supposed to provide us with material that is not only visually attractive and rich in experiments with space, but also to test them in the real conditions of film production.
