Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do the creators who will be developing their project as part of the study retain full rights to freely dispose of the finished VR work as authors?

No – the Film School is the lead producer of each of the works within the Lab and as the producer retains the rights to dispose of the work. Nevertheless, the school and the Lab are open to extensive cooperation in this area and the person who serves as a producer in a given team is tasked with preparing a promotion and distribution strategy for the project, which will be the most important document in planning the distribution of the work after its completion.

2. Referring to §III. 2.2. are the documents confirming achievements understood here as e.g. printouts from websites where the festival programme including the participant’s film has been published or in case of a CV e.g. a scan of a diploma from a given school?

The documents confirming achievements can be any form, including the applicant’s statement.

3. Question about the crew submitted by the participant. Is the producer you need to specify a natural person, a kind of creative producer who does not have to run a business and does not have to have material resources that he or she would invest in the project (apart from the resources granted by the laboratory)?

Yes, it is about an individual with experience in the production of audiovisual works who will participate in the entire production process both artistically and organizationally. There is no business requirement, no requirement for the producer person to own or invest any resources.

4. What is in the VR studio equipment (or will be starting in January) available to participants? This is important in the context of project budgeting. The budget referred to in para. 9 is, in other words, the assumed project cost estimate submitted by the participant at the application stage? If so, how detailed should it be?

The equipment includes various types of stereoscopic spherical cameras, stereoscopic cameras, camera accessories, computers with software enabling postproduction of VR images, various types of VR goggles, and to a limited extent also equipment for sound recording (including surround sound). At the same time we would like to point out that the project budget in case of applications in the contest is not analyzed by the evaluators in terms of whether or not it fits into the assumed budget, but it is mainly a source of information on how to think about the project: what are the proportions of costs between the various tasks, what elements of production are in the opinion of the applicants the most time- and resource-consuming, how are the accents distributed in the process of implementation, how many people perform various activities – this allows us to better understand and imagine the project and thus determine to what extent it fits into the plans and objectives of the Studio.

5. Is the amount of the grant gross or net?

The amount given is gross. Please note that the grant amount and the budget amount do not have to be in close correlation with each other at this stage – as we mentioned above, the budget has only informative value and its detail is important but it should correspond to the grant amount only in terms of the scale of costs, order of magnitude. In the process of project development it will certainly be subject to significant modifications and therefore precise determination of particular values at this stage is pointless. It is just an estimate. 6.

6. Competition budget vs. co-production. – Should the budget, which we are going to prepare, include planned but not confirmed co-production options from the very beginning? Is it possible to increase the production budget during the project realization, in case of acquiring additional external funds?

If the team participating in the competition already has other sources of funding secured, they can include them in the budget planning (on the importance of the budget in the competition stage, see the answer to question 4), but please list and document them. Inclusion of co-producers or new sources of financing is always possible at the stage of project realization, including, of course, renegotiation of contract terms.

7. [project emblem] – is it a logotype?

A project emblem is any word/phrase identifying the project, e.g. a shortened title.

The Artistic Council

The Artistic Council at the Visual Narratives Lab plays an advisory role, not only in the process of creating new works at the Lab itself, but most importantly in the process of selecting new participants for our art and research program. Members of the Artistic Council, together with representatives of vnLab, form the jury of each competition announced by the Lab.
